• Produces contractions similar to those occurring during labor at term by stimulating the myometrium (oxytocic effect).

• Initiates softening, effacement, and dilation of the cervix ("ripening").

• Also stimulates GI smooth muscle.

• Initiation of labor.

• Expulsion of fetus.
